India’s Finance Ministry has asked its employees to avoid using AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek for any office work. The government believes that such AI tools pose a threat to the confidentiality of government documents and data.
This information has been received from the internal department advisory. Countries like Australia and Italy have also banned the use of DeepSeek citing data security risks.
A letter has been sent to all the departments of the ministry, according to CNBC Awaaz, this letter states, “It has been decided that these departments include Department of Economic Affairs, Department of Expenditure, Department of Public Enterprises, DIPAM and Department of Financial Services.
This order was issued on January 29, 2025, that is, just before the Union Budget. That AI tools and AI apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek) in office computers and devices are a threat to the confidentiality of government data and documents.’
No response from the ministry on the matter so far.
So far there has been no response from the Finance Ministry of India, ChatGPT’s parent company Open AI and DeepSeek on this matter. Three officials of the Finance Ministry said that this note was correct and was issued internally this week.
