Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held talks in the Oval Office on February 13 (US time). The two leaders discussed business relations, immigration, defense products, nuclear technology and other major issues.

From the sale of F-35 fighter jets to India to the approval to hand over the main accused of 26/11 to India, 10 major announcements were made in the meeting between the two countries.

1. $500 billion trade target by 2030

Prime Minister Modi said that India and America have set a target to double the trade between the two countries to $500 billion by 2030. He also said that soon both the countries will finalize a trade deal.

In a press conference after meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington, Modi said, “We have set a target to more than double our bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Our teams will work to finalize a mutually beneficial trade deal very soon.”

2. Issue of illegal immigrants

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s commitment to take back Indian citizens living illegally in the US. He said that “these people are from ordinary families, who are misled by showing big dreams.” He stressed the need for joint US-India efforts to end human trafficking.

Modi said, “Our big fight is against that entire ecosystem and we are confident that President Trump will fully cooperate with India in ending this ecosystem.” His remarks came at a time when India accepted the return of 104 immigrants brought by a US military plane for the first time after Donald Trump became US President for the second time.

3. Tahawwur Rana and 26/11 Mumbai attacks

President Trump announced the handing over of Tahawwur Rana, accused of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, to India. On this, PM Modi thanked him and said, “I am grateful to the President that he has decided to extradite a criminal who committed genocide in India in 2008. Indian courts will take appropriate action.”

4. India will get F-35 fighter jets

America will give F-35 stealth fighter jets to India. This will make India one of the few countries, which include NATO allies, Israel and Japan. Trump said that “Starting this year we will give billions of dollars worth of defense equipment to India.”

Trump said that India is going to reform its laws to promote the entry of American nuclear technology into its country. He said that this important agreement on energy will make America an important supplier of oil and natural gas to India.

5. Combination of MIGA and MAGA

PM Modi mentioned his plan to “Make India Great Again (MIGA)”, which is inspired by Trump’s “Make America Great Again (MAGA)”. In a post on X after the meeting, Modi said, “President Trump often talks about MAGA. In India, we are working towards a developed India, which in the US context means MIGA. And together, India-US are building a mega partnership for prosperity.”

6. Trump’s statement on India-China border dispute

President Trump discussed the India-China border tensions and the Ukraine war. He said, “The clashes on the India-China border are very dangerous and I think they will continue. If I can have any role, I am willing to help because this must be stopped.”

7. India’s role on Russia-Ukraine war

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the efforts made by US President Donald Trump to resolve the Russia-Ukraine dispute and reiterated India’s stand that the dispute should be resolved at the negotiating table.

Prime Minister Modi said, “I have always been in close contact with Russia and Ukraine. I have met the leaders of both countries. Many people have a misconception that India is neutral, but I want to reiterate that India is not neutral, we are on one side and that is peace.”

8. Civil Nuclear Agreement

India-US resolved to implement the 123 civil nuclear agreement. Technical cooperation and investment will be promoted for the construction of US-designed nuclear reactors in India.

9. Civil Space Cooperation

2025 was declared as the landmark year of space cooperation for India-US. It plans to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) under the NASA-ISRO mission and launch the NISAR satellite mission soon.

10. QUAD and Regional Security

India will host the next QUAD Summit. Both countries will launch new initiatives to enhance cooperation during maritime security and natural disasters
